At FOACAS, we believe every dog deserves a second chance at life, no matter how bleak their circumstances may seem. Whether it is providing life-saving surgeries, searching tirelessly for a missing dog, or helping neglected animals rediscover love, our mission is to create brighter futures for rescue dogs.

This mission is made possible by the dedication of our team, volunteers, veterinarians, and generous donors. Together, we have turned countless heartbreaking beginnings into inspiring rescue success stories, including those of Spencer, Lyla, and Nora.

These three dogs came to FOACAS in desperate need, and because of unwavering community support, we were able to give them the second chances they deserved. Here are their remarkable journeys from hardship to healing.

1. Spencer’s Incredible Journey: A Test of Perseverance

Spencer found after 21 days in the wilderness

Spencer’s story is one of resilience and the power of never giving up. This six-year-old West Highland Terrier endured trauma from an early age. As a puppy, a poorly performed surgery on a fractured leg left him with a permanent disability. Later, he faced neglect from his adopter and was eventually returned to the same shelter where his story began.

When FOACAS learned about Spencer, we knew we had to step in. Despite everything he had endured, he still had so much love to give.

Spencer’s 21-Day Search

FOACAS arranged surgery at the Anicira Clinic in Manassas to repair Spencer’s leg, but an unexpected twist changed his story. Spencer slipped from his leash and disappeared. For 21 days, FOACAS and a team of volunteers launched an intensive search.

  • Community Support: More than 550 flyers were distributed throughout Manassas.

  • Expert Help in the Search: FOACAS hired a skilled tracker to follow leads in the woods and industrial areas.

  • Finding Spencer: After 20 days, a hunter’s camera spotted him. The next day, volunteers brought him to safety. Despite losing six pounds and wandering more than 15 miles, Spencer was finally rescued.

A Bright New Chapter

Now safe in Montgomery County, Maryland, Spencer has been adopted by a loving FOACAS member. He is enjoying the life he always deserved, surrounded by care and compassion.

Without the support of donors and volunteers, Spencer’s story could have ended differently. Thanks to people like you, who believe in the power of second chances, Spencer has a brighter future.

2. Lyla’s Road to Recovery: From Heartbreak to Healing

Lyla after being rescued

Few things are more heartbreaking than seeing a young dog in pain. At just seven months old, Lyla, a sweet Yorkie, endured a devastating accident in Baltimore when she was run over and dragged by a car.

At first, it appeared that her injuries were only surface wounds. Further examination, however, revealed severe fractures to her pelvis and hips. Without urgent and costly surgery, Lyla’s future looked grim.

FOACAS Steps In

When FOACAS learned about Lyla’s condition, we acted immediately. Emergency surgery was scheduled through Lazar Surgery at Bennett Creek Animal Hospital, and a fundraising campaign was launched to cover the costs of her care.

  • Donors Made It Possible: In just a few days, supporters came together to raise the thousands of dollars needed for her operation.

  • Lyla’s Recovery: The surgery repaired her injuries, giving her the chance for a pain-free life and lifelong mobility.

A Second Chance for Lyla

Today, Lyla is healing well and is back on her feet. Thanks to quick intervention and the generosity of donors, she is on the road to a full and happy life.

Her story is a powerful reminder that donations to FOACAS directly save lives. Without emergency funding, Lyla would not have had the chance to walk or thrive again.

3. Nora Once Blind: Rediscovering the World

Cute little Nora, the 18 pound girl

Nora’s story is nothing short of miraculous. This seven-year-old Havanese came to FOACAS in terrible condition. Her teeth were rotting, her fur was heavily matted, and an untreated eye condition had left her nearly blind. Local veterinarians recommended removing one or both eyes, which would have left her sightless for life.

FOACAS was not ready to give up. We believed Nora deserved the chance to see the world again.

Saving Nora’s Sight

FOACAS brought Nora to the ophthalmology department at Friendship Animal Hospital in Washington, DC. Specialists offered an alternative: with immediate surgery, her vision could be saved.

  • Donors to the Rescue: Within four days, the FOACAS community raised thousands of dollars to cover the cost of the operation. This incredible support gave Nora the chance she needed.

  • Nora’s Surgery Succeeds: The procedure restored full vision in her right eye and partial vision in her left.

Nora Sees Again

For the first time in years, Nora could clearly see and enjoy the world around her. While she still requires dental care, her restored vision has already transformed her life.

Thanks to the generosity of donors, Nora’s future is full of possibilities. Supporting FOACAS means you are not only saving lives, you are also changing them forever.

The Power of Community and Donations
